Procedures

Please note that the scenario described here is for an optimal case in which we receive sufficient warning that a client may be facing a health crisis. Actual procedures in each case may vary depending on the patient’s condition and other circumstances beyond our control.
6. Washout

Continue manual data logging using the appropriate pages; take photos if permitted.
We assume the ATP circuit has been primed before the patient arrives.
Place the submersible pump in icewater.
Run the ATP in closed-circuit mode to establish cooling. Meanwhile:
Transfer patient to prep table if no room for ice bath.
Prepare surgical field.
(Run circuit intermittently to maintain the low temperature.)
Raise femorals, cannulate.
Add glutathione and insulin to MHP2.
Connect patient with circuit.
Wash out blood with open circuit.
Take a sample of the initial effluent.
Run closed circuit for cooling to 5 degrees Celsius. During this period:
Log pressure, pump speed, temperature.
Take samples of effluent.
Maintain manual data logging.

In parallel with above procedures, another team member makes shipping preparations:
l Verify air shipping arrangements, and a passenger reservation if possible.
l Cut insulating foam board to fit Ziegler case.
l Place foam board on shipping tray.
l Place Ziegler on foam board, remaining foam board around Ziegler, taped in place.
l Place heavyweight body bag in Ziegler case.
l Place lighter-weight body bag inside heavyweight bag.
l Load the ice bags with ice, and remove air.
l Place ice bags in lighter-weight body bag to pre-cool the assembly.
l Jimmy one corner of the Ziegler case for thermocouple wire run.

At the completion of washout and cooldown, move patient to Ziegler case.
Position the ice bags strategically around the patient.
Run thermocouple wires out of the corner of the Ziegler case.
Screw down the lid of the Ziegler case.
Place and tape foam board over lid.
Tape the data logger on top of the Ziegler case.
Place cardboard lid on top of the shipping tray.
When paperwork permits, transfer the patient for air shipment.

7. Air Transport

One team member accompanies the patient to the cryonics organization if possible.
Convey patient to a representative of the cryonics organization.
Obtain a signature to affirm safe receipt of patient.
Witness the cryopreservation procedures if possible:
l Obtain the names of all participants.
l Make a manual record of procedures, temperatures, and times.
l Take photos if permitted.
l Verify the beginning of rapid cooling.

8. Cleanup

Remaining team members clean up at bedside and at mortuary:
l Dispose of all contaminated items properly.
l Bring back all full and empty meds vials.
l Give all flash memory cards (audio and digital photography) to team leader.
l Secure all documents relating to the case.
l Make sure no wet items are repacked in Pelican containers.
l Return rented vehicles and oxygen cylinders.
l Check out from motel or other lodging.
l Reaffirm good relations with all cooperative family members, medical and mortuary staff.
